How To Identify the Sub-Conscious Beliefs Holding You Back in Life and Business

If there is any area of your life or business that you have tried to change/improve without success, then you have conflicting beliefs that need to be identified and reconciled within your consciousness.

It is important to identify the beliefs that you bump up against (blind spots which you have practiced yourself into ignoring/repressing) as you attempt to change/improve certain areas of your life.

Until you resolve the inner conflict these ‘beliefs’ create, you cannot create different/improved circumstances in your life.

To some degree we can, and do, naturally shift old defeating beliefs. However, when you consistently try to change something in your life – unsuccessfully – it can be beneficial to enlist the help of an outside source. Preferably someone who is highly attuned to identifying beliefs and patterns of behavior, and can offer guidance as to how to shift them in positive life enhancing ways.

You don’t need a healer, coach or therapist… nor do you need a modality, religion or outside force to change you. The real power is always within you no matter what path you take in life. That being said, we often will manifest people, circumstances or events that help us facilitate changes that we’ve clearly identified we want to make.

The key to recognizing what ‘external solution’ will help you, is to feel for a resonance or alignment with the specific solution. If it feels good – for instance you feel relief when you contemplate moving forward with a healer, coach or modality – then you know the experience will bring you benefit. Always feel for the alignment.

A Strategy for Identifying Conflicting Beliefs:

Sit down in a quiet area with paper and a pen.

Take several deep cleansing breaths to center yourself and prepare your mind for this process.

Write down on the paper your intention, in this case, you may write something like – What do I believe or expect with regard to ____________? (fill in the blank with the subject you are working through).

Now write down everything you think, feel, believe, and/or expect. Let it flow naturally. Some of it may seem empowering; over the years you have accumulated many positive beliefs about this subject. Other statements you write may seem very negative. It is common for you to see patterns in your current life, as well as expectations about yourself/your future that correlate to childhood feelings/experiences. During this part of the process (assuming you are being honest with yourself about all of your thoughts and feelings) you will begin to see with more clarity what beliefs are still active within your consciousness.

When you feel a sense of completion, stop writing. Note: It is okay to stop and reflect, then resume writing until you feel complete.

As you take time to reflect on what you’ve written, be aware of metaphors that enter your mind. For example, your past limiting beliefs felt like you were swallowed up within a swamp – you’ve been functioning with your head barely above the filthy water. But now you can see yourself emerging from the murky muddy swamp into the clean clear valley. You have been cleansed of the past stuck-ness and now feel light and free.

The metaphor is a powerful part of transformation. Metaphors and symbolism are frequently used in rituals and mindset work because of the effect they have on our consciousness. That being said, if you do not immediately resonate with a metaphor, it is okay. You may process the shift in a slightly different way at an appropriate time. Some people will experience the reconciliation of beliefs during the dream state.

This is one of many processes you can use to identify and shift old beliefs which no longer serve you on your life path. If you are interested in individualized support, you are welcome to schedule a complimentary phone consultation to discuss my private one-to-one services.

Tools for Growth: Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)

In 2005, after a confusing and traumatizing life event, I was faced with two options … to either let the fear and emotional pain consume me, further diminishing my quality of life – or – to pursue a path of growth and personal empowerment through self-discover and inner healing. I choose the latter. One of the many techniques I came across on my healing journey was EFT, otherwise known as Emotional Freedom Technique(s). This particular healing modality was profoundly beneficial, producing noticeable improvement of my mental and emotional wellbeing.

My transformation inspired me to such an extent that I pursued my advanced training in the technique; at that time directly through the founder of EFT, Gary Craig (before he gave up exclusive rights to EFT, which at a later date he reclaimed). In 2006 I began working with clients using EFT and my clients were seeing excellent results from our work together. To this day I still frequently use and teach EFT to my clients as a tool for self-empowerment, emotional healing and personal growth.

Like any modality, results vary depending on a variety of factors; however, I strongly believe it is one of the most valuable tools for holistic healing and personal empowerment we currently have available to us. Many people over the years have created variations of the technique, and still more have published videos, books, and even entire communities revolving around the technique. That being said, there is no shortage of material readily available – both free and for sale.

Regardless of whether you have used EFT in the past or have never heard of it, I offer a brief introduction to the modality (perhaps a refresher course for those who have used it previously), so that you can apply it to any mental/emotional challenges you currently face. I do not profess to be a doctor, healer or miracle worker … nor do I guarantee any results. However, if you utilize the technique with sincere intentions for releasing and resolving old unnecessary emotional wounds, limiting patterns of belief or dis-empowering behaviors, then you will very likely notice tangible and/or intangible improvements.

Here is a short Introduction to EFT Training Video that I did for my Business Mindset Mastery program several years ago: https://youtu.be/P1XwMLcQBhg

Are you aligned with your life purpose?

Guest post by Emma Lyons, Life Purpose Coach

Do you get a subtle, yet unmistakable niggling feeling that your work at the moment just doesn’t quite fit you somehow? Even if what you’re doing happens to be your own business, do you find yourself running out of steam and passion for your many projects? Or do you get sneaking, niggling thoughts that indicate a misalignment between your current career and what you really want? If the purpose isn’t quite there in your current role, maybe it’s time for you to alter the path and start walking down a new path that is truly purposeful, passionate and aligned with who you are in this red hot moment of time. There is no inspiration in doing a business based on what you’re “supposed” to do. If you’re not turned on, you won’t turn anyone else on.

We are all familiar with people who achieve long-held goals, whether that be in their career or in another area only to find themselves falling flat emotionally with the horrific disappointment as to whether this is as good as it actually gets. These thoughts can arise at any stage, even when we’re heavily invested in a career or business. If we don’t listen at an early stage, the alarm clock gets increasingly loud, becoming more and more painful and we can become chronically misaligned. In the early stages this alarm clock can appear as a subtle ennui that most people easily ignore. However the longer we leave this, doing nothing to address the issue, the more difficult and challenging the wake up call is likely to become.

1. Core Values

If this is you and you sometimes find yourself miserable within the empire you’ve struggled so hard to create, if you feel like your business and the beliefs you hold around it are holding you and your life hostage, the good news is that there is a way out of this situation. To leave this painful emotional state behind, you need to get clear on what you really want for your life. What are the values you are seeking to express in your mission? And the most obvious question of all what is it that you want to achieve in your life? What is it that you want to leave behind? What will be your legacy to future generations? I don’t have to tell you that being miserable is not going to take you further in that direction.

2. Belief Systems

Next you need to take a hard look at the results in your life so far and get clear on what belief systems are currently in operation inside your head. For some the clarity of what to do is there, but there is massive fear as to how to move in that direction. Is it that you don’t think a change is possible at this ‘late’ stage? No matter how late you think you are, the truth is that it’s never actually too late unless you decide to believe and take that on for yourself. Maybe the anxiety about all the stuff you would have to learn is holding you back. Another word for learning is growth. So start looking at all that scary learning you may have to do and focus all the potential growth and opportunities that can spring out of this. Also, don’t hesitate to appreciate the transferable skills you already have. No matter how different your new concept appears to be from your old role, you can bring massive value to this with the experience you carry with you.

Maybe you, like so many know that something isn’t quite right, but just have no freaking idea as to where you’re ‘supposed’ to be heading. The stuckness that so often arises from this usually stems from an overwhelming feeling of dread that moving will somehow cause all you know and all that is familiar to crumble down around you to reveal the terrifying void of the unknown. The trick with these kinds of feelings is to look and find what’s truly going on beneath. What’s the worst thing about the unknown? What are you really so afraid of? With the help of a good coach and some serious introspection the answers will arise and the truth will set you free. Yes indeed, we can choose new belief systems and reinterpret our past to create a new and exciting present and future. Since nothing in life has any meaning other than the meaning we give it anyway, why not take the hint from the universe, don’t be a martyr to your old belief systems and actually do something about it.

So be brave and own up to yourself if what you’re doing now is no longer exciting you, if it seems to drain your life’s energy and motivation and leaves you feeling disempowered and anxious. Know that this is not who you truly are. Own that misalignment and take the nudge from the universe to start you moving from misaligned misery to expansion, purpose, passion and enthusiasm. No matter where you are now, know that this is possible for you.

If this resonates with you and you are looking for a guide on this exciting journey feel free to get in touch for a no obligation strategy session. I can help you get clear on your current values; belief systems and can help you shift to more empowering beliefs. While this can happen really quickly I work with people over periods of 6 weeks to 6 months to ensure clarity, purpose, passion and excitement are deeply ingrained in your new life.

The Mindset, Marketing, and Making of YOUR Lifestyle Business

Getting Aligned (Chapter 2: The “Outside the Box” Entrepreneur)

As a Business Coach and Mindset Strategist (a word I coined to describe the unique way I work with clients to shift subconscious patterns), I help my clients identify and resolve the old beliefs/patterns that create problems in their life. We all have beliefs, behavior patterns, unresolved emotional wounds and fears that hold us back from the happiness, fulfillment and success we aspire for. This is where the misalignment originates.

In order to create what we want in life or business, we must be in alignment with it. When our old conditioning opposes our desire, the achievement of our desire can feel impossible.

Virtually every one of us can relate to setting a goal that was easy for us to achieve. Likewise, we can all relate to setting a goal that not only seemed to elude us, but was extremely emotionally painful in the striving (and potentially failing) to achieve it.

It always has to do with our beliefs, or what I refer to as our conditioning.

This understanding of belief systems has become common knowledge to many. You don’t have to attend college for psychology or receive advanced training in hypnotherapy from an accredited collage like I did to understand that our beliefs affect our lives. That being said, understanding how to change your belief systems is much more complex. Furthermore, the answer to our greatest challenge is typically in our blind spot. Sometimes we need help to clearly see what is holding us back.

What is alignment?

I frequently use the word alignment. It has a metaphysical origin, as well as a practical one. I believe both are relevant. We live in a fascinating universe; complex beyond comprehension. It is perfect – infallible – strategic – mathematical and adhering to strict universal laws that govern our existence. If that seemed deep, that was my intention. To understand alignment, we must understand the law of attraction. A senior law, which encompasses several other universal principles, and can be simply defined as: Like Attracts Like.

Metaphysicians long before our time knew that everything in our universe is energy. Everything seen and unseen vibrates at different frequencies. Whether it is the chair you are sitting on, the electromagnetic frequency emitted by your cellphone, or the thoughts you are thinking, they are all energy; each vibrating at a unique frequency. Taking this concept a step further, each thought you think has its own unique frequency. And their corresponding emotions are also vibrational in nature.

The law of attraction could be explained metaphorically as the law of magnetism. The magnet is always either attracting or repelling based on its polarity. It doesn’t stop. Again, it is always working – either attracting or repelling. Forgive my seeming insensitivity towards ignorance, but anyone who says the law of attraction doesn’t work for them is wrong. It is a law, it is always working. You are always attracting to you a vibrational match to your dominant thought/emotion vibrations.

So when I refer to alignment, I am referring to a state of being. Specifically, when your dominate thought-emotion vibration is aligned with the vibration of what you want.

When you have old beliefs, patterns, and conditioning that contradict what you desire, you are emitting a vibrational frequency that is out of alignment. Like the magnet in our metaphor, it is repelling what you want.

An important caveat: It is not always necessary, and certainly not beneficial to try to identify and change every “negative” belief or pattern. It is, however, necessary and beneficial when you know you are out of alignment with what you desire. Especially when the thing you wish to change is creating distress.

When you have old beliefs, patterns, and conditioning that contradict what you desire, you are emitting a vibrational frequency that is out of alignment.

How to release the beliefs, patterns and conditioning that are creating misalignment?

This is a big topic. One so big, there are literally millions of books, audios, therapists, coaches, experts, programs, and techniques to address it. Is there one that is more effective than another? Sure. Is there one that is guaranteed to work for everyone? Unlikely. Why it is that way is another big topic, and one that I will not address here. However, I will say, in order for any technique, expert or solution to work for you, you must have made the decision to change.

I like to use an example to demonstrate this important concept. When I owned and operated my hypnotherapy practice, I attracted a lot of clients who wanted to quit smoking. Before I would agree to take on the client, I assessed their readiness to quit. Smoking is an interesting thing, because there are a lot of emotional reasons someone smokes. There are also a lot of emotional reasons that same individual wants to quit.

The subconscious mind stores all of the memories, good and bad associations, habitually practiced and reconditioned responses the smoker has had. And even when someone knows all the logical rational reasons to quit, from the health implications to the expense and social dogmas, their subconscious is holding a stronger more powerful positive association with the behavior.

The good news is that the old positive associations can be overridden. And smoking can easily become a thing of the past. But, if the individual has not make the decision to quit, if they waiver, or if they are doing it because someone else wants them to – not of their own choosing, then nothing or no one has the power to facilitate the change.

This is important to understand. You can change almost any belief, pattern or conditioning with the right tools and intention. But, if you have not decided — if you have not committed, then you will not change. If you waiver, then you are holding onto a belief that there is more benefit to stay the same than to change.

Stop for a moment and reflect on this…

Honestly reflect on what benefit you get from staying the same (your current circumstances). Is it the comfort of what is known? Is there a secret benefit, like sympathy? Be brutally honest with yourself, because if you truly want to create the lifestyle you desire, and something is in the way, then you must identify what you are holding onto and be willing to release it. You must make a committed decision to change.

This is important to understand. You can change almost any belief, pattern or conditioning with the right tools and intention. But, if you have not decided — if you have not committed, then you will not change. If you waiver, then you are holding onto a belief that there is more benefit to stay the same than to change.

Review and Implementation

You already know the importance of taking action. In fact, often what separates successful individuals from those who live a life of mediocrity is the willingness to take persistent action in spite of obstacles, setbacks and delayed gratification. If you have not already taken time for introspection based on the previous chapters, I encourage you to do so now.

♦  What do you really want?

Not what you think you should want or think you should have, but what you desire with your whole heart and soul. What does that look like? What does that feel like?

♦  What benefits are you getting out of your current circumstances?

Be brutally honest with yourself. If there is something you have been struggling to change, then you are holding onto something. Why might you not want to change? What are you afraid you will lose?

♦  Make a committed decision.

If you are clear about what you really want, and you are willing to let go of what was in the way, change can happen with ease.

The ability to change starts with a committed decision.

Sales Success: Are You Sabotaging Your Sales – Unconsciously?

One of the most common blocks to business growth is fears and self-limiting beliefs around sales. Let’s address this taboo and get to the root of the problem.

Selling, for many people, is the equivalent of a dirty word. That in my opinion is unfortunate. In truth, we are always selling… we sell our self to a potential mate, during an interview for a new job, when we meet someone new (if we want them to like us), to potential clients and customers and any time we want someone to understand our point of view. But for the sake of this blog post, I am going to focus on the conventional definition of sales.  ‘Selling your products and services to a consumer/client.’

I remember going through ‘old school’ sales training. Yuck! It felt awful. It was all about manipulation tactics, fancy techniques, creating (false) rapport and closing the sale. Today’s entrepreneur engages in business much differently and the old model of selling just plain does not work anymore. I say, “Thank God!”

Selling is about connecting with the individuals who want or need what you have to offer. And it is your responsibility to educate your prospect (aligned client or customer) as to whether your product/service is a solution that will benefit them. If you have a product or service that you truly believe in, then it is time to break free of the old sales paradigm and step up to support them.

I am known for talking about mindset. I eat, sleep and breathe mental conditioning… well not literally. It is however something I am extremely passionate about because it does and will continue to affect virtually every aspect of our lives; including sales and the financial success (or failure) of your business. All it takes is a few negative subconscious associations with sales and you could be predetermining a negative outcome over 90% of the time. Let me give you an example of this.

Let’s say you believe on some level that sales people are sleazy and manipulative. Well, when you are selling your product or service (even if it is the best thing in the world) there is a deep unconscious feeling of guilt or shame; and imagine… what type of vibe that is sending to your prospect? We have all been around someone with that vibration. It is extremely off-putting. So much so, even if the product is the solution to your prospects problem, they will not feel comfortable doing business with you. They may not even consciously know why.

Psychology has come to some fascinating conclusions about our ability to read people. Your energy determines how people respond to you. It determines whether or not they trust you, like you and will choose to do business with you. We have very subtle senses that affect our choices in regard to other people.

So what is the solution?

You must shift your unconscious beliefs about sales. I have been in multiple types of sales positions over the past 15+ years. I had been low man (woman) on the totem pole and the TOP sales person within the company… and what it comes down to is your belief in yourself and in your product or service. If you are in love with your product or service and are still struggling with sales and income then it is time to change your perception of selling! If you had the cure for world hunger, would you think selling it was bad or wrong? I sure hope not. Unless you are selling snake oil, please be open to a new way of perceiving sales.

A conscious approach to sales.

A conscious approach to sales is selling with honesty, integrity, confidence, charisma and a genuine respect for your clients and customers. Can you be effective in sales with this approach? You better believe it! How would you prefer to be sold to? I rest my case. Mastery is to be proficient to the extent that you are doing it unconsciously (for instance, you are unconsciously competent at tying your shoes or driving a car). Can you see how being a master at sales in a conscious way could radically increase your income?

When you begin to shift out of those old fear based beliefs about sales, marketing, business and money, you shift into what I call ‘Being a Conscious Entrepreneur’ or even a ‘Conscious Sales Professional’. Image if every business shifts to this model. No more scarcity mindset. No more manipulation or deception. We begin to live and work harmoniously; all contributing to the greater good with our unique values, talents, gifts and abilities. I encourage you to look at your beliefs around sales. What beliefs are no longer serving you? It is time to let them go.
